The Democratic School of Huamachuco is the first democratic school in Peru.
The project started in 2007 when by chance two teachers form the small town of Huamachuco met a teacher from a German democratic school who was visiting Peru. The enthusiasm of these two Peruvian teachers to make their own democratic school in the small township of Huamchuco high up in the Andes was so big that in a very short time a cooperation with the Free Democratic School Kapriole was established in order to make the dreams come true.
With hard work of the Peruvian team and also big support from children, teachers and other volunteers of the Kapriole in Germany it was possible to start the first year with 15 students aged between 5 and 8 in the spring of 2009. An own school building is under construction and the school will be growing along with it every year taking on 15 new children. The planned figure is up to 90 children, including a boarding part with ca. 30 pupils for those who have to manage long ways from their homes in the wild mountain area.
One big principle is also to build the school as sustainable as possible using simple material and a lot of good ideas. The foundation is set with a 2000W wind generator for the electric power supply.
On the long run the school is thought to become a center for knowledge and exchange for the benefit of the whole region. Ideas that can be spread and can be of use for the neglected mountain population.
