We are a film school in Berlin that is entirely run on principles of self-organisation. If you join the filmArche community your are part of a course of up to 15 people which is exploring one of these
disciplines: camera, directing, script-writing, editing and film production . The students run their own courses and the school all by themselves. They choose what they need to learn to successfull filmmakers, learn new skills and aquire expert knowledge and then teach it to the other students at weekly coursetime. They also run classes specialising in one area of interest that are open for all members (film history, script development, audio engineering, documentary film making). Beyond that, every student does committee work like PR, homepage and wiki administration, international relations, fund raising and many more.
There are no professors, no professional teachers or administrators, only some helpful experts that come to filmArche on invitation. For the whole school there are some administrative and educational positions that students can be elected to on the plenary conference twice a year.
All courses are represented on the central council.
Every students, in his or her three years at filmArche, is required to participate in at least three semi-regulated film projects. The results of which are first shown and discussed in internal critiquing sessions and later in well attended public opening nights. But most students engage in a lot more film projects to gain valuable experience in their chosen field of filmmaking.
The filmArche institute has been growing continuously since 2003 and is now run by about 200 active members. It is located in Berlin Kreuzberg.
Many members are from Germany and Berlin, but a double handfull are from other European countries, or even Israel.
