Gigapan Magazine is a seed for an interactive learning environment - based on choice and rich withknowledge - driven by a multi-age global community, including among others: school students (public, democratic, free, home-schooled, unschooled), educators, artists, journalists, scientists and others.
The magazine is building on the Gigapan imaging technology developed by the CREATE Lab (CMU Robotics Institute) and NASA. Adaptedfrom the system used on the Mars Rover to explore the face of Mars – the Gigapan robot and website allow learners on earth todocument and explore their environment in outstanding detail. It empowers themto create interactive media presentations using simple tools. These large scalepanoramas allow the viewer to decide what part of the scene they would like to further explore.

This system also allows for adialogue between learners about each other’s environments and interests. A pilotprogram under the umbrella of UNESCO IBE currently includes participatingschool groups from five countries. An example of its first exchange can beviewed in the documentary "GigaPan Conversations "
GigapanMagazine highlights the learning potential of these capabilities. It servesimages rich with information – contributed by a variety of sources, including the opportunity for learners to communicate amongthemselves as well as directly with information sources. It is open forsubmissions and guest editors – as the community it envisions will include groups andindividual learners in establishing the wealth of knowledge it contains.
